Recommendations Welcome...The Missing Piece

About a month ago I was visiting with one of my Aunts (it was her ___ birthday) and we were joined by a couple of family friends Donna and Pamela for a lovely day of Arts in the Park in Camden Maine.  The weather was unfortunately quite dreary – the company was fortunately not.  These ladies are as far from dreary as it gets so we had a really wonderful day never minding the weather.

I knew that Donna, Pamela and their family (they are sisters) winter in Florida but really had no idea what part of Florida….it’s a big state you know.  So you can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to learn that their winter homes are near Tampa….perfect as these are just the ladies to tell me where all the great treasures are.  I can't remember the first time I met Donna (it was that long ago) but the first time I met Pamela was several years ago.  She was at a rummage sale buying a bargain life sized bust for her then teenage son (which unfortunately for me he loved and still does)…I knew instantly she was my kind of lady.  Both Donna & Pamela have an amazing decorator eye…although Pamela is the only “official” decorator.

Well, the recommendation they gave me was a consignment shop called The Missing Piece so I immediately put it on my list and headed over directly after my visit to the Henry B Plant Museum (see my visit to the Plant Museum/Tampa Bay Hotel here).

Not really sure what to expect I did know one thing…they had beautiful things on their web page and they came recommended so it all looked good.  I was a bit surprised when my GPS let me to the deep corner of a strip mall but given Florida’s somewhat strip mall centric nature I’m not sure why I was surprised.  The real surprise though was all of the gorgeous pieces I found when I went in.

This piece was in a vignette at the front door...what a wonderful hint of
what was to come.

The sunlight coming in from the front window really messed with my
stellar photography skills (lol) but this piece was so beautiful
in person...trust me
I love the color of this buffet...you would expect black or red for this
style but blue?  The unexpected definitely works!

The Missing Piece is really primarily consignment furniture…there are a few accessory pieces but really its clear furniture is their core specialty.  It’s also not vintage but classic pieces are beautiful whether they are new or old.

I will someday have a room large enough for a piece like this...it will be
filled with beautifully written literature...contemporary & classic (surprise, I
have a bit eclectic taste in books).
This Roll Top Desk was so unique and beautiful in it's simple lines.

What I generally love about consignment is not only that there are always bargains to be had but more importantly I always see unique pieces that I never see in regular furniture stores. There were plenty of those as well as good quality pieces that have more shall we say “mass appeal”.  Bottom line…there is so much to drool over here.

This piece was very different than anything else
I saw and could work in so many places...great colors
much loved look...really beautiful
Oh this baby came so close to coming home with me.
You have no idea...white opalescent swirl ....a lamp that
shimmers...what could be better?

I was definitely wishing I either lived closer or had a big truck with a nice driver to haul it back for me.  They do offer delivery…wonder if that covers the 10 states and 1375 miles (yes I Mapquested it) to my house.  On second thought, it’s probably best I don’t have either of those or I would have a very empty bank account….but a house full of furniture…and maybe a guest spot on that show Hoarders lol.

And one final beauty...the crewel lampshade
was fabulous!

Plan B in Rowley MA - Village Antiques

Ever have a day when the best laid plans for a girls day out just wash away with the rain and you have to move to plan B?  Well this was the case when a couple of weeks ago my best girlfriends and I had planned to spend a lovely spring Sunday morning at Todd Flea Market in Rowley MA.  It seemed like the perfect laid plan, breakfast, beautiful day walking the fields looking at goodies, girl bonding time…and then it rained L.

Luckily we’re not the kind of girls to let it rain on our parade so we headed off to the Agawam Diner to caucus over eggs & pancakes and formulate said plan B.  Now when I tell you the Agawam Diner was packed out I am not kidding…line out the door…sure sign of good food…and it definitely did not disappoint.

Although I had really not spent any time in Rowley (shamefully since it’s just around the corner from my house) I had done enough reading in local publications to know that there were several antique & consignment shops that were worth a stop & luckily I had included the information for these on my “shop bucket list”.  So off we went…

First stop was Village Antiques and I knew as soon as I walked through the door this was going to be good.  I barely crossed the threshold when I spotted a small stack of Woods & Burslem red transferware.  The only question was…were these plates my pattern, Colonial or the ever more popular English Scenery?  Well, they were Colonial!!!   I was so excited, I didn’t even hesitate they were mine!

These dishes are the same pattern that my great-grandmother had when I was growing up and she was such a good cook that I am convinced that everything I make automatically tastes better on these dishes.  After my great-grandmother passed away her dishes were sold with the rest of her estate.  So when a few years later when I stumbled upon some in an antique shop I decided to make these my every day china.  Finding pieces in good shape at a reasonable price is not always easy but so gratifying when I do score a find.  These were a find.

How fun is this suitcase bar...I can think of plenty of
business trips I would love to take this on :)
Now, this was a great start to a really fun visit to Village AntiquesKate, Pam, Cheryl & I all loved the mix of items Village Antiques had and the shop owner was such a fun lady.  It was such a pleasure to support her business.

Love this FDR bust...I was so tempted!
This "unfortunate" lady really got us laughing
We visited several other shops this rainy Sunday..Salt Marsh Antiques, The White Elephant Shop & The WhiteElephant Outlet.  It was such a fun day!

And of course I spotted this fabulous
lamp...I just love the pop of color!

Lamp Addict

Hello, my name is Kelly and I am an addict.  This addiction has manifested itself in the form of home accessories, in particular lamps.
Since I introduced you to Rhoda a couple of posts ago
I thought I'd share her very pink apartment from
Mary Tyler Moore Show particularly because of the
awesome basket manequin floor lamp she had!

I don’t know when my obsession with lamps started but it definitely seems to be growing to epic proportions lately.  It seems to have come to a head on my recent Charleston trip.  I had no idea this addiction had grown so out of control until I looked back at my photos from my Charleston adventure and just happened to notice a theme….

from Celadon - Charleston SC

another from Celadon - this time a pair
It’s a funny thing too because I have always had an affinity for accessories (shoes, handbags, jewelry, etc) – when nothing else fits or looks good a beautiful pump always feels good.  Apparently this general accessory trend has now bled over into my home…does that mean my home is having a fat day?

Either way, it’s clear from all of the pretty lamps I’m seeing these days that I am not the only one who is hooked on a beautiful lighting.
